What Is a Business Day?
In most global commercial markets, a business day (or working day) is defined as any official work day—typically Monday through Friday in Western commerce. Saturdays and Sundays are designated rest days and are excluded from business calculations.
However, work week patterns differ internationally:
- Western standard: Monday to Friday (5 working days / week).
- Middle East & North Africa (MENA): Sunday to Thursday is standard in several countries, with Friday and Saturday observed as the weekend.
- 6-Day work weeks: Certain manufacturing, retail, and hospitality sectors treat Monday through Saturday as working days.
The Business Day Mathematical Formula
If there are no intervening public holidays, you can approximate business days using the following formula:
Total Business Days = (Full Weeks × 5) + Remaining Weekdays
Where:
- Calculate total calendar days between Start Date and End Date. (You can verify total calendar days using our Date Difference Calculator).
- Divide total days by 7 to determine the number of complete 7-day weeks. Each complete week contains exactly 5 working days and 2 weekend days.
- Examine the remaining remainder days (0 to 6 days) and check whether each lands on a Saturday or Sunday.
- Subtract any observed statutory public holidays falling on a Monday–Friday.
Handling Public Holidays & Observed Days
The primary source of error in manual scheduling is handling bank holidays that fall on a weekend:
- Observed Holiday Rules: When a national holiday (such as New Year's Day or Christmas) falls on a Saturday or Sunday, many corporate and government entities observe the holiday on the preceding Friday or subsequent Monday.
- Contractual Definitions: Review contracts carefully to see whether "business day" refers to statutory federal holidays or general calendar workdays.
